About Augmentation With Lift
Sometimes restoring volume to the breast with a breast implant is not enough to correct droopiness. This is referred to medically as ptosis (pronounced "toe-sis"). At Dr. A Jay Burns Cosmetic Surgery, we provide breast augmentation surgery to fill out a breast, and when necessary, give the breast a lift with a reduction of the loose skin to eliminate your current amount of sag. If you don’t have a significant amount of droopiness, then a simple breast augmentation will fill out the skin envelope and "lift the breast" by simply restoring volume. However, augmentation alone will not always prove sufficient. Therefore, some type of combination augmentation/mastopexy is carried out by our board-certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. A Jay Burns.
A breast augmentation with a lift would result in some additional scarring in reducing the skin envelope. However, it can be done simultaneously with a small implant to restore or increase volume. Any time an implant is placed, the risks and benefits are the same as for a breast augmentation. We invite you to meet with Dr. Burns to discuss your needs face-to-face in our Dallas, TX cosmetic surgery office. Dr. Burns is an exceptional doctor who will provide you with aesthetic solutions to meet your needs with realistic expectations.
Women, who at one time had larger breasts, may opt to have a breast augmentation surgery with a lift to achieve the desired results of a perkier bustline. An ideal candidate for this procedure would be a woman who has had her breast stretched from pregnancy, breastfeeding, or extreme weight loss. In these cases, both augmentation (enlargement) and mastopexy (lift) may be necessary to restore the breast, especially if skin elasticity is insufficient. This is one of the most difficult consultations in breast surgery, especially for those who do not want to have extremely large breasts, but want no scarring. Some compromise is inevitable. A careful consultation keeping your specific needs in mind is essential.
Plan Your Procedure
- Procedure Recovery Location
In an inpatient setting and under a general anesthetic, your doctor will first perform the breast lift before placing the implant. Excess skin on or around the breast will be surgically removed and the muscles and tissues will be tightened. This will allow your breasts to sit in a more elevated position. Depending on the type of incision carried out, your nipple and/or areola complex may have to be repositioned. Sometimes, the areola complex is also reduced in size. The selected breast implant will also be placed as well before the incision is sutured.
What To Expect
Your post-operative pain will be handled by oral pain medications and usually the first three days are the most intense, but tolerable with pain-relieving medications. An overnight stay at Dallas Day Surgery Center is recommended where you can sleep comfortably overnight and then be taken home the following day. After 3 days, the intensity of the procedure diminishes greatly, as does the swelling.
Most of our patients can return to work in 7 – 10 days. There will be discomfort with jogging and running and sudden movements for several weeks. You can expect that it will take 4 – 6 months for your breasts to settle fully into their new position. It will be important to follow all your doctor's post-operation advice and make all follow-up appointments. Until you are released to exercise, it is best to limit the amount of strenuous physical activity you do for 3 – 4 weeks.
