A: How long until you can evaluate the final liposuction results

The answer here is fairly straightforward. You can rely on a final result of liposuction in most cases at 6 months post operatively.

If you saw results immediately and then saw those results decline, you are either seeing swelling(if early in the first 6 weeks) or you are gaining weight. However, if you gain weight after liposuction you do not typically see it in the areas that have been liposuctioned. You see weight gain in the areas that were not suctioned.

I hope this helps you sort things out, but be as patient as you can for the first few months.

Q: Best Procedure for Firming Neck and Chin?

I’m about to turn 50. The skin on my face is relatively firm and in great condition for my age so I don’t need a Facelift.

However, my neck and chin area doesn’t look nearly as good as my face. What are my options for firming up the neck and chin area?

A: Isolated Neck lifts

I do not believe most patients understand that the bands and looseness in the neck are connected to the face, In fact the SMAS (sub muscular aponeurotic system) is a fascia (like grissel on steak) runs from the cheekbone to the clavicle. It is like a curtain.

It is hard to push a curtain up from below and make it look optimal. It is best to pull a curtain up from the top of the curtain, which is the face. This may not be what you want to hear, but the best way to treat the neck is a facelift in my opinion.

I see many surgeons perform an isolated neck lift because that is what patients want. However I see many patients who have such a procedure that are disappointed. In fact, I see patients who have their neck tightened toward the middle without doing a facelift. This approach can oftentimes actually bring the SMAS layer toward the middle and create a worsening of the jowl area.

I know many patients are afraid of facelifts because of a few bad results they have seen. However a well done face lift usually produces a result that is natural and youthful. A well done facelift actually should be very hard to detect. The ones that are detected are usually only the bad ones.

I would encourage you to go to an experienced Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and discover his or her approach. Thoroughly review their work in before and after photos to achieve a comfort level. Most facelift patients in my practice are extremely satisfied and have a much improved contour in the neck and face.

What is Cellulaze?

Cellulaze is the only minimally invasive laser procedure designed to attack the structure of cellulite beneath your skin. It delivers longer-lasting results after only one short treatment.

How does the Cellulaze cellulite laser work?

A very small cannula (or tube about the size of the tip of a pen) is inserted under the skin. Cynosure’s unique SideLaze laser fiber inside the tube delivers energy directly under the skin. This increases the thickness and quality of your skin, while simultaneously releasing the fibrous bands that pull it down—minimizing the orange peel look associated with cellulite. Finally, the cellulite laser is used to diminish the lumpy pockets of fat that protrude though the fibrous bands under your skin.

How do I know if Cellulaze is right for me?

Cellulaze delivers best results for women who are not significantly overweight but have mild to moderate cellulite on their thighs. Please talk to your Cellulaze physician to get the best information cellulite laser treatments.

How does Cellulaze compare to other treatments?

There are countless treatments that claim to get rid of cellulite. But these other treatments—massage, external energy devises, creams and lotions—can only treat cellulite superficially by working at the skin’s surface. These treatments require either daily or weekly applications and results are often inconsistent. Cellulaze is the first and only cellulite laser treatment that treats the actual problems underneath the skin to deliver a proven longer-lasting result from just one simple treatment.

I’ve tried everything to get rid of cellulite. How do I know Cellulaze really works?

Cellulaze is backed by many years of clinical research. Studies have shown it increases the thickness of your skin by 25% and the elasticity of your skin by 29%—significant claims that haven’t been made by any other treatments. Thicker and more elastic skin can help flatten and smooth the skin surface to improve the appearance of cellulite. In addition, 93% of patients surveyed were satisfied or very satisfied with their results at one year post their procedure, and all would recommend the Cellulaze cellulite laser treatment to a friend.

What does the procedure feel like?

Because the area is numbed with local anesthesia, there is minimal discomfort during the procedure. You may feel a light pressure, but it is a mild sensation. Following a Cellulaze cellulite laser treatment, you may experience some aches, much like after a physical workout.

How long does the Cellulaze procedure take?

On average, this cellulite laser procedure will take one to two hours. This is dependent on the size of the areas to be treated.

Do I have to stay in the hospital?

No. Cellulaze can be performed under local anesthesia either in-office or in a surgery center.

How many treatments are necessary?

Results are achieved with just one Cellulaze cellulite laser treatment. Your results will continue to improve over the next three to twelve months.

How long do the results last?

Clinical studies have shown results can last for one year or more1. However, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen to continue to enjoy Cellulaze cellulite laser results.

Will there be scarring?

The incision sites will be very small. With proper care, any scars will be barely noticeable. Your physician can evaluate your skin type and provide the best information on scar prevention.

What’s the recovery time?

The Cellulaze cellulite laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia. Some light bruising can occur, but you’ll be able to return to normal activities within a day or two. Your physician may ask you to wear a compression garment for a short period after treatment.

Q: My waist is around 30 inches, I want to make my waist smaller. What procedures will I need to accomplish that?

A: Making waists smaller

I have been doing plastic surgery for 25 years and have never had a specific number goal to waist size. Realize that your pelvis and bone structure will determine your smallest waist size limit.

However, if you want to make your waist smaller there are two ways to do that.

liposuction of love handles and waist. If you have fat you can grab in your hands in these areas, specifically lower abdomen, then you can suction it and reduce waist circumference. With your height and weight you must not have too much, if any fat in these areas.

abdominal wall tightening in conjunction with a tummy tuck. This would be indicated if you abdomen has loosened due to pregnancies

Hope this helps. One more thought. I don’t have any photos of you which would help, but at the end of the day, be sure to not be too hard on yourself. Your weight and height seems in line from a strictly numbers standpoint.

A: Belly Button position with tummy tuck

Classically there are two anatomic landmarks for positioning belly buttons with tummy tucks, one is the midline and the other is a line drawn with the superior iliac crests.

The crests are the two bony prominences you can feel on the front of your pelvic bones.

This seems straightforward, but actually it is many times not that straightforward as the pelvis can be tilted to one side or the other. In fact pelvic tilt is more common than not.

Also many people have lopsided bodies due to one side being wider than another. Just look at your natural belly button and realize it may not be in the exact middle now!

So I place the belly button at the level it is currently, ie…I place it where God put it and I try to place it as close to the midline as possible.

Finally I relate all of these facts to my patients to give them realistic expectations, which should be a belly button as close to the middle as possible at or near the level it was before the surgery.
